Beautiful Homes but Ugly Roads
Let’s work together and fix our roads!

The Problem

Beautiful Homes but Ugly Roads

Everyone admits we need to fix the roads.

Through the special assessment district petition process, we have the opportunity to solve this problem, together.

The Solution

The Oakland County Road Commission’s road engineers have reviewed our roads and determined that the following is necessary to fix our roads:

“Four-inch bituminous (asphalt) pavement will be placed over aggregate base with full depth cold milling asphalt removal. Curb and gutter/open ditch removal and replacement, total underdrain installation with sodded shoulders and minor drainage improvements to reasonably assure drainage of the pavement surface. A maximum five (5) foot approach will be constructed to existing driveways to provide smooth transition from the newly paved roadway where necessary.”

Why does it cost that much?

The estimate is based on core samples, surveys, and a detailed assessment conducted by the Oakland County Road Commission. Based on those detailed assessments, they have designed a plan to refurbish our roads. Using that plan and their years of expertise in bidding on similar road projects the Oakland County Road Commission has delivered the residents the estimate of construction costs to fix our roads included on the petition.

Are there cheaper alternatives?

No. The Road Commission of Oakland County owns our roads, and therefore they alone can repair the roads. If this petition fails and we choose not to fix our roads, we will have to settle for just filling potholes and our roads continuing to deteriorate.

More than a dozen other Bloomfield Township homeowners associations have done exactly what we are proposing.

As strange as it sounds, our estimated construction cost is cheap compared to the $45,000+ per home residents in Bloomfield Village must pay to fix their roads.

What if we don’t fix the roads now?

Yes, accepting our broken roads is an option. However, we need to be aware:

  1. Road construction projects never get “cheaper.” Inflation, labor costs, and government regulations will only increase the cost of future construction projects.

  2. Our poor roads will only degrade further as today’s potholes allow more water into the subgrade. A stitch in time saves nine.

How Much Does it Cost?

The Road Commission estimates the cost of fixing our roads will be about $1,690.59 annually, plus interest, over 15 years. That's a total cost over fifteen years of $25,358.98 plus interest. The estimate is based on the Road Commission's detailed plan for repairing our roads and includes factors like inflation and labor costs.
